Chapter 10

Alex shivered at Rafir’s promise of continued intense erotic acts. He nudged the were’s head with his own, and traced his lips along Rafir’s neck, nipping his way across his Adam’s apple, then over her carotid artery, his tongue darting to the beat. He’d enjoyed the concentrated heat of Rafir’s cock in his mouth, but equally, he loved the taste of Julia’s pussy. As a vampire, he’d learned how both men and women offered pleasure—different, but equally fantastic. In the past four months, he’d taken his gratification where he could find it, but nothing had compared to how he felt in this pack’s embrace.

Rafir had given Alex what he needed most. A reason to live. He felt his eyes slip a little, his beast coming to the surface. His hunger had been growing with his desire. Rafir’s pulse pounded in his ears with Julia’s a strong second behind. He dug his fingernails into the palms of his hands to keep his fangs from descending. It didn’t work.

He rolled off the bed and hit the floor in a crouch.

“Alex,” Rafir said, phrasing his name like a question.

Julia had crawled to the edge to see what was happening, the worry obvious in the tilt of her brow.

Alex put his hands over his head and buried his face between his knees. “I can’t do this. I can’t be normal.” He looked up at both of them. “I can’t stop being a monster.”

Rafir crawled onto the floor with him. He cradled Alex in his arms. “I’m sorry, Alex.” It seemed the night was full of apologies. “I didn’t think. I’d brought you blood home, but it’s probably not any good at this point.” He kissed Alex’s forehead and pressed the vampire’s face against his chest. “Take what you need from me.”

Alex’s teeth grazed Rafir’s skin as his hand slid up Rafir’s side. There was still a slight impression where the bullet had entered. “You’re not well enough to feed me. You need to keep your strength up until all the silver sulfide is out of your system.”

Julia joined them on the carpet. Rafir wrapped his arms around both of them. “You make me strong. Both of you. And together we are all stronger. But Alex, you can’t deny what you are, no more than I can deny what I am, or Julia. It’s just the way life is.” Alex closed his eyes when Rafir smoothed back his hair. The wolf continued. “I talked to Gui and Nathan at the club before I brought you home last night. They explained how denying your vampire side is what causes you to lose control. You have to take a little each day to keep from going crazy and killing someone.”

Alex shook his head. He’d gone crazy and killed his friend. He deserved the pain of hunger, but Rafir made sense. Even so, Rafir had nearly been mortally wounded only a few hours earlier. “I’d die before I’d cause you more harm.”

Julia gazed up at Alex, her warm hand resting on his chest.
